OPEN CALL: AUDITION FOR STREET DANCERS FROM VARIOUS STYLES

Cullberg is a national and international contemporary dance company based in Botkyrka outside Stockholm, founded by Birgit Cullberg in 1967. Together with invited choreographers and artistic teams, we give space and time to in-depth work where we investigate what dance and choreography can be, how dance can be produced and presented. Together we create a repertoire that comments on and reflects the present. We work continuously so that a large audience in Sweden and internationally can experience contemporary dance. Kristine Slettevold is artistic director and Stina Dahlström is managing director. Cullberg is part of Riksteatern – The Swedish National Touring Theatre.

Cullberg is looking for ten dancers from various street styles with strong performative skills, interested in working explorative and creatively with movements and form, for a project with choreographer Hooman Sharifi (NO), and project advisor  Niki Tsappos, taking place in Stockholm, October and November 2023.

The project explores the context of the battle format from street dance where performing solo and dancing together is in focus. How do dancers tune in to each other, influence one another and create togetherness? What happens in the meeting between different dancers, backgrounds, and styles? The project entails dancers from Cullberg and dancers from the street dance community.

The choreographer Hooman Sharifi (NO) was born in Teheran in 1973 and came to Norway at the age of 15 as a refugee. His dancing career began with street dance in his teens in clubs and streets and continued with ballet and contemporary dance in his twenties. He graduated from Oslo National Academy of the Arts with a degree in choreography. He is particularly interested in the artistic expression found at the intersection between dance, theater and visual arts. Physically challenging, intense and powerful, Sharifi’s movement language explores the emotions and structures behind hierarchies, power, political systems and violence, through precise movements and stage effects. In 2000, he founded his own company, Impure Company, that focuses on social engagement and politics and has created over thirty dance works since its inception. From 2014 to 2018, Sharifi was artistic director of the Norwegian national company for contemporary dance, Carte Blanche in Bergen. Impure Company and Sharifi has collaborated for a long time with the hip hop crew dEEp doWN dopEiZM as a dramaturge and advisor, and with them created the performance Now the Field is Open. Sharifi has also worked with Subsdans and soul sessions and encounters. His own works at Carte Blanche include Shadows Remain Silent, which premiered on Den Norske Opera’s main stage in 2014, and While They Are Floating. Sharifi has collaborated with several large institutions and his works have achieved great success in Norway and internationally.

During the project you will be working in close collaboration with the whole team at Cullberg. The company has 16 dancers, an artistic team, a technical team and a production team.
The Cullberg dancers have a multifaceted capacity to work with various methods and materials and an ability to move in between these and work with different contexts. The dancers possess strong improvisational skills and different technical dance backgrounds and they all have an important role in the creative work, both in the studio and in the choreographic process.

We are seeking to assemble an ensemble that is diverse in terms of age, gender, skin color, geographical and cultural background and sexual orientation.
